Become a member of Northern Spirit Singers!
Northern Spirit Singers is always interested in hearing from potential new members —at the moment we’re looking for strong sopranos and altos particularly. We rehearse every Thursday during term time from 7.30 pm to 9.30 pm in Elvet Methodist Church, Durham. We are a very friendly bunch of people, as well as being ambitious for our music making: you’ll often find us down the pub after a rehearsal, or hosting a party after a concert.
We normally put on a concert at the end of each term (in December, March and June/July), but also collaborate on one-off projects with locals musicians and groups. These projects are usually agreed by consultation with the choir so that nobody becomes overburdened!
Choir subs are £75 per year, which covers the costs of sheet music, venue hire, publicity and instrumentalists. If paying this amount is a problem, please mention it at your audition: we don’t want to turn anyone away because of subs, and will work with you to find a solution.
You’ll need a good voice that blends with the current group of singers, and the willingness to commit to weekly rehearsals during school term times: while we are happy to accommodate people’s other commitments, and 100% attendance is not required, we are not a project choir.

- enjoy singing a wide range of choral repertoire, both sacred and secular
- want to perform concerts to a very high standard, but with a manageable commitment
- are keen to make music in a relaxed, friendly and enjoyable manner
- have a good voice, which blends well with other singers
- have good sight-reading skills and
- can commit to weekly rehearsals during term time
then we would love to meet you.
